Mobile phone company scam: data charges abroad

by Simon Hilton on Tue 04 May 2010

When you’re on holiday in the USA or Asia with your iPhone or iPad, consider this:

250 MB is:

  • About 35 minutes of YouTube video at standard-definition
  • OR about 8-10 minutes of YouTube or iTunes video at 720p hi-definition
  • OR about 70 songs from iTunes
  • OR a few thousand Web pages and typical email usage in a month
  • OR more than 4,000 Facebook photos

Typical UK charges for International prepaid Global data plans (Orange)

  • 1MB = £8
  • 5MB = £17.50
  • 10MB = £35
  • 50MB = £88.13
  • 200MB = £135

If you don’t get a prepaid bundle, you will be charged at £8 per MB, so:

  • watching SD You Tube via G3 will cost you £57 per minute (a 90 min movie = over £5,100)
  • watching HD YouTube via G3 will cost you £250 per minute (a 90 min movie approx £22,500!)
  • downloading a song from iTunes via G3 will cost you an additional £28.57 per song

Your iPhone or iPad could end up being the most expensive Multimedia device you’ve ever bought.
